Sarah Susanka – Not So Big

Sarah Susanka is a modern day architect who has been at the forefront of the smaller house movement.  Her Not So Big House series of books has been incredibly popular and has given voice time and again to the idea that well designed space is better than more space.  A detailed read of Susanka does not leave one with the impression that there is a magic square footage number and it has to be smaller than the neighbor in order to be en vogue, but she has brought significant awareness to the idea of designing a space well for multiple uses and for ultimate longevity.  In her books she draws on many different architectural styles and movements in the American experience, Arts and Crafts, Prairie, Farmhouse, New England, all with the same intent.  To create a home for the people who will ultimately live in the houses.  This is a great video of her explaining the concept.  Pay close attention to the fact too that she is in Frank Lloyd Wrights Unity Temple in Chicago, a great space in its own right!
